HOW CAN I PLAY MINI-CDs?
1st of all, please don't try and play them in your car (or any other 'slot drive' player for that matter). If your CD player has a tray (that comes out when you press 'eject') you will notice an 8cm divert in the centre. Pop it in there and jobs a good un! Will also play in any player with an attachment circle in the middle of it (portable CD player for example), where you can clip the CD onto.

"Bye Bye Burland Grove" is the debut EP by Gas Kunst conspirator, Dick Cable. Primitively recorded by Cable at home the 3 songs were mixed by Tim Woodbridge and mastered by Joel Magill. The EP came about when our family decided to move house this Summer, I made a lot of recordings in our home, 13 Burland Grove, and I really wanted to capture the sound of the place one last time. I decided to take one afternoon with no distractions (no easy task in itself for a full time care worker and father of 2 young children) and get down these last few songs which I felt captured the spirit of the place for posterity if nothing else. It's all first takes, lots of improvisation, the whole thing almost falls off the track here and there, effects applied in real time, analogue drum machine, toy keyboards, warts and all. They are some of the most intuitive recordings I've ever made. My laptop died the day after and I was just left with mp3s of the unmixed tracks.
In the meantime Tim Woodbridge who mixed everything got in touch with our group Gas Kunst after he found us on Tom Robinsons Fresh on the Net and offered to mix something for us. Long story short and 3
months down the line the laptop came back repaired, the recordings were saved, I showed Tim the recordings and he really dug them. Tim spent a great deal of time pro gratis really bringing out the best in
the sonics of the record which is something I couldn't have afforded otherwise and I'm eternally grateful to him. The Opening number "Midnight in the Oubliette" is my reflection on fatherhood, family life,
commitment and loyalty. It's a song I sculptured over the course of a year, chipping away until at the last
minute it's final form was revealed. This track in particular draws on the freak folk tradition embraced by my partner Keeley Cheswick and I in our previous band/collective, Hanami Family.
The other songs; "Shady Comes Home" and "Overlands and Overwater" were both improvised the day before my 40th birthday and other than a few tweaks are the same songs that spilled out in real time
while attempting to come to terms with my sisters terminal cancer diagnosis. To me in hindsight they speak not only of grief and great trepidation but also offer a celebration of childhood, community and
togetherness. Although I still can't claim to fully understand every line, singing these songs has brought me some degree of catharsis since my sister passed away just before Christmas and for that I am eternally
grateful. The later has transformed into the centre piece of Gas Kunst's live set and in that incantation seems to take on an almost ecclesiastical other worldly quality. This was the last track I recorded and the night was getting on, it shows, it lacks the cohesion of the others, it's out of tune and out of time for the most part but there's a great vocal and I stand by it, if you can get through it the rewards are there.
I've been recording music for nearly 25 years now, mostly with different bands and at home for fun but something about this short collection felt special and with the continued support of Rare Vitamin Records
it seemed right and natural that this would have a physical release into the real world.
